Biography

Osoranna Mojekwu is a Nigerian-American artist whose work boldly reclaims Black identity through vibrant, textured portraits that centre and celebrate African features.

He paints Black features as they are and as they should be celebrated: full lips, wide noses, rich skin tones, and textured hair are not just included in his portraits, they are amplified. This exaggeration is not about distortion but about reverence.

It is a deliberate act of countering erasure, of saying, boldly and beautifully, “this is who we are.”

His art is constructed with a hybrid sense of form and texture, often incorporating elements like aluminium foil and thread. These materials aren’t randomly chosen; they are deeply symbolic.

Aluminium foil, for example, speaks to the idea of protection and reflection, shielding and shining at the same time, while thread signifies connection, history, and continuity. In this way, each piece becomes not only a visual experience but a tactile one, telling stories that echo both personal memories and cultural heritage.

Osoranna’s themes revolve around identity, resilience, and community. He portrays the Black body as a site of power and beauty.

Recently he was commissioned by Adidas to create two large-scale artworks for the brand’s new flagship store in Lagos.

The pieces, installed as monumental statements within the space, not only showcase Osoranna’s signature style but also mark a significant moment: a major global brand centering African artistry in one of the continent’s most dynamic cities.

This collaboration is a testament to how his work resonates not just in galleries, but also within contemporary cultural spaces.

For Osoranna, art is more than aesthetics, it is a language. A way to challenge what has been normalized, to unlearn what has been imposed, and to shape what could be. Through his work, he insists that Blackness is not just beautiful but boundless, not just visible but visionary.

Osoranna Mojekwu is not merely creating art. He is creating space, space for truth, for pride, and for possibilities yet to be imagined.
